About what you'd expect from a melee Dire Troll; the Mauler is the cheaper of the two non-character options (with the Earthborn Dire Troll being the other choice).

Weapons and Attacks

  • Big Meaty Fist (x2) - Decent POW fists that can dish out some serious punishment.
    • Open Fist – This grants access to more Power Attacks.
    • Chain Attack [Grab & Smash] - If this model hits the same target with both of its initial attacks with these 2 weapons, after resolving the 2nd attack it gets a free power attack against that target: Double-handed throw, single-handed throw, head-butt, headlock/weapon lock, or push.

Animus

  • Rage - This animus gives +3 STR to target friendly faction model.

Special Abilities

  • Regeneration [d3] - This model may be forced to heal the listed number of damage points once per activation. Models that use this ability are unable to run this turn.
  • Snacking – When this model boxes a living model with a melee attack, the victim is removed from play, and this model heals d3 damage points.

Thoughts on the Dire Troll Mauler

The Dire Troll Mauler in a nutshell

The Dire Troll Mauler is one of the two Dire Troll beatsticks, hitting the enemy in melee until they stop moving and making the enemy have to focus on them to stop them pounding things into a pulp. But also very important for the Mauler's game is its animus - Rage. Allowing anything to hit really hard and (unusually for a melee heavy) giving him something to do on turns when he isn't killing things himself.

This means he's one of the damage buffing trinity (Mauler, Slag Troll, Pyre Troll - with Rok as an auxiliary member).

Combos & Synergies

  • Anyone with a thrown weapon - the STR buff also applies to thrown weapons.
  • Madrak1 and Madrak2 - Both of them throw Rathrok (Madrak1 even has Snap Fire for two attacks).
  • Madrak1 - In addition to Rathrok also has Carnage to help the Mauler hit and land the Chain Attack, Sure Foot for anti-knockdown tech and a feat to make the Mauler into a wrecking machine.
  • Doomshaper2 - The Mauler is an excellent recipient of Wild Aggression for the Chain Attack, and of Goad for the ability to get into combat.
  • Borka1 - Mosh Pit! Mosh Pit! Boost the first attack roll, knockdown, and automatically land the Chain Attack (Borka also loves Rage).

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • Without putting Rage on himself he's surprisingly pillow-fisted. With it he drinks FURY (and Trollbloods lack fury management).
  • Chain Attack: Grab and Smash is great when it works. He has a 125/216 of carrying it off against DEF 11, and it does nothing to colossals.
  • Despite the teeth he has no bite attack.

Tricks & Tips

  • Remember your power attacks.
  • Work out who wants Rage. Remember that you can massively swing a battle without risking your Mauler just by making someone Rage.
