Blightbringer - Legion Gargantuan Warbeast

73088_Blightbringer_WEB.jpgShrouded by a cloud of blighted ash, the Blightbringer burns with an inner fire like that of the dragons themselves. Hails of gunfire disappear in the billowing haze, and the dragonspawn’s overwhelming emissions smother the talents of enemy spellcasters. So hot are the fires burning within that the very blood pumping through its veins remains at a perpetual boil. The Blightbringer is the flame around which the legion gathers, while the empires of men and dragons tremble at their approach.

The Blightbringer is extremely expensive (as are all gargantuans).

Weapons and Attacks

  • Blighted Breath - Long range, large AOE, high POW.
    • Damage Type: Fire - Models who are immune to Fire are not damaged by this weapon.
    • Blight Fire - the Blight Fire AOE remains in play for one round and has the same effect as chosen for Blighted Breath (below).
  • Bite - My, what big teeth you have.
  • Tail - High POW.
    • Critical Poison - If this weapon critically hits a living model, it gains +d6 damage.
    • Rear Attack - When declaring attacks with this weapon you gain 360° vision.

Special Abilities

  • Gargantuan - Gargantuans are giant warbeasts, even bigger and stompier. They all share a stack of standard special rules.
  • Blighted Breath - At the start of your activation choose one of the following Breaths. Breaths affect all nearby models for one round.
    • Dragon's Breath - Nearby friendly faction warrior models gain a bonus to STR and ARM.
    • Spiritual Corruption - Affected enemies cannot cast spells, use animi, or channel.
    • Withering Ash - Conceals everyone near it, friendly and enemy. Enemies also lose some DEF and lose Tough.
  • Eyeless Sight – This model ignores forests, cloud effects, and Stealth when determining LOS. This model ignores Concealment and Stealth when making attacks.

Animus - Boiling Blood

  • Boiling Blood - average cost animus, target SELF. When the target is hurt, make a spray attack then the animus expires.

Thoughts on the Blightbringer

The model featured has only just been released in the last year or so (if it is even available at all yet). As such, the model has not received much playtime and this article is mainly based on "theorymachine". If YOU have real gameplay experience with this model, please add your thoughts to the article!

The Blightbringer in a nutshell

This is something new - a support gargantuan. Fortunately it has a very solid ranged attack and an infantry screen to keep it safe. Spiritual Corruption is mostly protection against Butcher3 - but you can decide whether to skew your models accuracy or damage.

Combos & Synergies

The first thing to point out is that almost all warlocks are warrior models - models like Thagrosh1 in particular can get some superb ARM values from Dragon's Breath.
  • Rhyas - She's an infantry caster, and the Blightbringer makes superb use of her Rapport.
  • Thagrosh1 - Another infantry caster, and his ARM can get fairly ridiculous with Dragon's Breath. For that matter so, effectively, can the ARM of his Blighted Ogrun infantry ARM-skew.
  • Lylyth2 - You shouldn't say no to two AOEs that big.
  • Ravagore - Its animus can make the Blightbringer's large AoE set everything on fire.

Drawbacks & Downsides

  • It's a very expensive support model.
  • Legion are known as the warbeast faction for a reason. You want lots of warbeasts, not all your points sunk into one.
  • No open fists + no melee weapon in your left or right field of fire = no Sweeps, Power Strikes, Throws, Double-Handed Throw, and no Weapon Locks.

  • Note: To field a minion warlock with Legion, you need to be playing a game which allows 2 (or more) warlocks.

Rules Clarifications

Withering Ash
  • Although it's concealment, it doesn't trigger Prowl because it's not an AOE.
